My name is Joshua Newth, and I am a believer in Jesus Christ. I came to faith in late 2004 after watching The Passion of the Christ. After watching the film, Christ touched my heart, and I gave my life to Him. God put it on my heart to get a Bible, which I did. The first book I turned to was Joshua, because of my name, but after reading the first chapter I turned to the New Testament — and when I read the words of Jesus Christ, the Saviour, I believed.
Since then, God has patiently taught me through Scripture and strengthened my understanding of the gospel. I created this website — including the Basics of the Faith 101 document — to help others discover the biblical faith and find everlasting life in Christ.
Along my journey, I explored Roman Catholicism and began the RCIA process. However, through continued study of Scripture, my beliefs on justification, sin, and the Trinity changed in ways that no longer align with Roman Catholic doctrine. I now hold that the “sin unto death” refers to apostasy — the sin against the Holy Spirit — and that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father alone, as Jesus said.
The most important reason I no longer believe in Roman Catholic doctrine is not the Trinity, though that is essential to get right, but my understanding of sin. Nowhere in Scripture is the distinction between venial and mortal sin defined, and therefore I believe it is an error. Once Jesus cuts someone off — which the Catholic Church associates with mortal sin — that person is cut off forever, since Christ cannot be sacrificed more than once. For this reason, I believe the Roman Catholic Church is in error when it teaches that a person can be reconciled after mortal sin.
However, Christ does not cut someone off easily. As He taught in the parable of the fig tree, He gives every opportunity and grace for repentance before doing so. But once a person is cut off, they cannot be restored, because restoring them would require Christ to be sacrificed again, which Scripture forbids.
If you want to learn more about these beliefs, I’ve included them in the Basics of the Faith 101 document. My hope is that everything on this site will help you grow in understanding, draw closer to Christ, and find the life He offers.
